Coconut Grove is easily explored on foot, but for a unique experience SUP Miami takes touring the neighborhood to the water. Founded last October, this family run company has guides ready to give tours daily both in the Grove and South Beach. Plans are in the works to expand to Key Biscayne and North Bay Village soon.
SUP is an acronym for “stand up paddleboarding” and originated in Hawaii as an ancient form of surfing. Standing up while paddling gives guests a great view with less equipment than kayaking might require. Not to mention a killer core workout.
Those interested in participating have a couple different options. First, choose between the North Coconut Grove tour which goes by Lebron James’ house, Viscaya Museum, Madonna’s former house and more, or the South Coconut Grove eco-tour where they spot birds and fish while talking about the impact human beings have on the environment. Speaking with the owners, their passion for nature comes through immediately and these tours are geared towards environment and social responsibility advocates. Tours can be as short as 1 hour, but most opt for 2 to 3 hours.
For a completely different experience on a board, they feature weekly fitness excursions. These consist of a rigorous cardiovascular exercise routine that combines paddling with push-ups and strength training using body weight.
Tours are open to people from all over the world and different walks of life. Groups can be up to seven people of all ages (under 12 sit on the board rather than stand). They also offer specialty tours whether it is a sunrise or sunset tour, pet-friendly tour, corporate team building excursions and more. Additionally, they take pictures with a professional waterproof HD camera throughout the day which are for purchase afterwards
For bookings, check out their website. Tours are available seven days a week (excluding holidays) at 8:30 am, 12:00 pm and 3:30 pm.
